I listen to a LOT of music, so it’s no wonder that all of my characters have their own theme song. Each book has its own theme song, too, and I listen to music constantly while I write.
For SILVER: Acheron, I was mostly listening to Victoriandustrial musician, Emilie Autumn. Her Opheliac album is so perfectly dark, tortured, and ever so slightly angry. At this point in the SILVER timeline, Ella ‘Silver’ Cross has just been banished for treason. She’s caught up in an emotional whirlwind, and Autumn’s Opheliac encapsulates this turmoil perfectly.
Emilie Autumn – I Want My Innocence Back
This is the theme song for SILVER: Acheron. It just about sums up how Silver is feeling throughout Acheron. She’s been banished after being convicted of crimes she didn’t commit—her innocence has quite literally been taken away from her. She’s angry and ready to lash out. “I will cut you down and I will run you through... You’ll suffer for this, I swear...”—she wants revenge.
Emilie Autumn – Opheliac
This is the theme song for Ella ‘Silver’ Cross. It represents Silver’s despair. “You know how hard it can be to keep believing in me when everything and everyone becomes my enemy...”—the lyrics are perfect for Silver’s growing depression and a battle against her own sorrow. The song is titled after Shakespeare’s Ophelia, who is incapable of dealing with her own distress and kills herself.
Emilie Autumn – Misery Loves Company
This song represents Silver’s confused feelings for Luka: “Do I need you? Yes and no. Do I want you? Maybe so...” She’s depressed and miserable and she wants to let him make her feel better, but she doesn’t want to be just another one of his conquests, nor a pity-romp.
ReVamp – I Lost Myself
I think of this song whenever Silver loses herself in a bottle. It encapsulates her attempts to come to terms with the changes in her life, and the loss she feels over being parted from her lover, Alex: “Estranged from who I am... Estranged from what I want...” This is Silver at her lowest point.
Delain – Not Enough
Silver begins to punish herself for all that’s happened to her. She begins to think that she deserves the pain and the torment and she starts to actually feel guilty: “I’m the jury, I’m the judge, and I committed all the crimes...” And in the swell of this, she feels helpless.
Lyriel – Leverage
Pulling herself through the depression, Silver finds a way to deal with her banishment. She begins to see herself in two halves: Firstly, as Ella Cross—a girl who died the day she was banished. Secondly, as Silver—the hardened warrior left behind in her wake. The line “Changed my name and foolish hopes...” is symbolic of the newly resurrected Silver giving up hope of ever being repatriated. She’s mourning the loss of her former self—“Someday I’ll turn my head around and I’ll look you straight in the eye. You are all I fear for you are all I love, my decay...”—but at the same time, she’s vowing not to let this experience destroy her completely: “I’m not going down. I will carry on to do what I must do...” Forging Silver from the ashes of Ella Cross is a necessary evil—the ultimate coping mechanism.
Two Steps From Hell – Strength of A Thousand Men
An instrumental piece that symbolizes Silver regaining her fight at the end of Acheron, when she’s finally offered a chance to redeem herself. She hasn’t lost everything. Alex is still out there. She can return to him.
